J. Benton Hurst
Ben Hurst’s legal experience advising the U.S. Army and serving as a federal prosecutor affords him a unique understanding of the issues Graves Garrett clients face.
Prior to joining the Graves Garrett team, he served as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate, where he specialized in the areas of labor and employment law in addition to administrative law. His background also includes serving as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Western District of Kentucky. In that role, he represented the U.S. in criminal litigation. Collectively, his varied experience strengthens the legal counsel Graves Garrett provides individuals and businesses in the areas of commercial litigation, white collar criminal defense litigation and compliance and internal investigations.
As a Judge Advocate in labor and employment law, Ben’s work included representing the Army in litigation before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Merit Systems Protection Board and in negotiations and other labor matters under the Federal Labor Relations Act. His experience as an Army Judge Advocate in administrative law spanned analyzing proposed regulations and policy memoranda, command investigations, separation actions, financial liability investigations, line of duty investigations, and officer appointments and enlistments for compliance with federal law and Army regulation. He also represented the U.S. as prosecutor in courts-martial and administrative separation boards.
Ben managed a docket with scores of cases each month as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, and he represented the government in criminal litigation that included crimes of assault, larceny and drugs.
He began his legal career as a law clerk for The Honorable William Duane Benton in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ben earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he served as executive editor of the Virginia Law Review. Before law school, he received an A.B. in Economics while minoring in Russian and Humanities at Washington University in Saint Louis.
