Graves Garrett welcomes former federal prosecutor Daniel Stewart
Graves Garrett LLC is pleased to announce that J. Daniel Stewart, a highly respected and seasoned former Assistant United States Attorney, has joined the firm to support our work in a range of complex investigations and litigation matters.
Stewart’s extensive background prosecuting all types of federal criminal offenses will add significant strength to Graves Garrett’s focus on white collar criminal defense litigation, internal investigations, commercial litigation, and regulatory and compliance matters.
Stewart spent 33 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Western District of Missouri (Kansas City) and Northern District of Illinois (Chicago). During his tenure, he held numerous leadership positions, including his long-time role as Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney for the high profile National Security and General Crimes units. His experience included prosecution of violent crimes, fraud and economic crimes, corruption, and matters of national security. His tenure also included a two-year detail with the Department of Justice in which he worked in Serbia to train Serbian prosecutors, police, and judges. In addition to his legal achievements, Stewart is known for his commitment to collaborating with numerous federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on highly complex investigations that often caught the interest of national media.
In one of his most renowned cases, Stewart successfully prosecuted four defendants, two California men, a Tennessee woman, and a Higginsville, Mo., woman, who were part of the nationwide “Miracle Cars” scheme, which defrauded hundreds of victims, including many in the Kansas City area, of millions of dollars.
“Dan is highly regarded for his long-time leadership within the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and there is no doubt that his background will play a key role in our continued representation of businesses and executives in complex litigation and investigations,” Todd Graves said. “We could not be more pleased to have him join our team not only because of our relationship as former colleagues but also for the simple fact that there is no one else in practice today with the same level of experience.”
Stewart joins Graves Garrett after retiring as Assistant U.S. Attorney almost two years ago. He received his juris doctorate from Northwestern University School of Law and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana.
Graves Garrett is home to two other former U.S. Department of Justice attorneys. Graves previously served as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, and Nathan Garrett previously served as Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri and as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. Garrett also served in the unique dual role as federal prosecutor and Special Agent of the FBI, and the firm is home to additional former federal prosecutors, federal agents and paralegals.
