Alan Simpson is an associate attorney with Graves Garrett and an active member of the firm’s free speech and election law practice. A recipient of Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s 2017 Up & Coming award, Alan routinely counsels and represents clients on a range of political law issues, including state and federal campaign finance regulations, government ethics matters, and initiative petitions.
Some of Alan’s recent representative matters include:
- Prosecution of First Amendment claims against the Missouri Ethics Commission regarding 2016 constitutional amendment;
- Representation of private and publicly-traded corporations in federal and state campaign finance compliance;
- Representation of political committees in Missouri statewide candidate and ballot measure elections;
- Argued before the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, and pro hac vice before the South Dakota Supreme Court.
In 2017, Alan’s representation of clients in litigation matters including constitutional litigation, commercial civil litigation, and white collar criminal defense earned Alan recognition as a Rising Star in Missouri and Kansas by Super Lawyers. Alan’s litigation practice particularly focuses on cases challenging the validity of government action, including laws, regulations, or official acts. Alan also frequently represents clients in math-intensive litigation where Alan’s undergraduate degree in statistics helps create extra value for clients. Alan also has prior experience in the defense of False Claims Act whistleblower cases.
Prior to joining Graves Garrett, Alan served as a law clerk to the Hon. Julie A. Robinson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas and the Hon. Arthur I. Harris in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
Alan graduated, with honors, from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned undergraduate degrees in economics and statistics, magna cum laude, from the University of Missouri.
Alan is admitted to the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States; the states of Missouri and Kansas; the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; and the United States District Courts for the Western District of Missouri, the Eastern District of Missouri, and the District of Kansas. He is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Federalist Society, the Republican National Lawyers Association, and the Lawyers Association of Kansas City, where he serves as Secretary for the Young Lawyers Section.
Alan resides in the Kansas City area with his wife, Colleen.
